George R.R. Martin Gives Update On Winds Of Winter, Says It's 75% Done And Biggest Book Yet

Author George R.R. Martin has provided an update on the next A Song of Ice and Fire book, The Winds of Winter, which he's been working on for a long time now. Fans are eagerly awaiting its release, but the book isn't ready yet and likely won't be soon, Martin said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert recently.

The Winds of Winter will be the biggest entry in the series so far by page count, Martin said, noting that it will eclipse A Storm of Swords and Dance With Dragons.

"I am making progress with The Winds of Winter, but it's still not done yet. I think it's going to be a very big book. The biggest books so far were The Storm of Swords and Dance With Dragons. Those were both about 1,500 pages. This one is going to be bigger," he said.

Martin said he thinks he's about "three quarters" of the way finished writing The Winds of Winter. Some character story arcs are finished and others still need to be completed. "The characters all interweave, so I've actually finished with a couple of the characters--I've got their whole story. But not others. So I have to finish all that weaving. It's still going to take me a while," he said.

While Martin can't say for sure when he'll be done with The Winds of Winter, he said he knows for sure he'll begin getting badgered for the next book immediately. "The next day I will get the first tweet that says 'Where's A Dream Of Spring?!' Martin said, referencing the next book to come after The Winds of Winter.

In other news, Martin recently talked about how he's never played Elden Ring despite working on the game alongside From Software. Martin doesn't play video games at all any longer due to his addictive personality.

In addition to writing The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, Martin is an executive producer on House of the Dragon and the upcoming Jon Snow TV series starring Kit Harington.
